Katja Loher: About INvisible Limits
May 9th - July 3rd, 2024
Crossing Art is delighted to announce the upcoming opening of "About Invisible Limits," an immersive and captivating exhibition showcasing the creative, innovative practice of acclaimed Swiss artist Katja Loher. Scheduled to open to the public on May 9, 2024, with a grand opening reception from 6 to 8 PM, the exhibition will run until July 6, 2024 at the gallery’s location in the heart of Chelsea, New York (559 W 23rd St, New York, NY).
Katja Loher's alluring, cosmic video artworks beckon viewers into a realm of spectacle and introspection. Loher is renowned for her trailblazing approach to art: she seamlessly reimagines organic forms with cutting-edge technology, creating sculptural displays that transcend the ordinary. Within the spatial imaginary of "About Invisible Limits," Loher invites visitors to explore her creative thesis through video installations, video-sculptures, sculptural light boxes, and a window projection, a critically immersive experience that will be sure to challenge audience perceptions through a multimedia, interdisciplinary approach.
Central to the exhibition will be a series of spherical installations suspended throughout the gallery space. These captivating spheres serve as the canvas for Loher's video art, each one a dynamic, sensory fusion of light, sound, and motion. Loher communicates these allusive stories via choreographed dances filmed in a bird’s eye view. These dances feature performances by costumed individuals dressed as creatures such as plankton, bees (microscope), as well as kaleidoscoped colors and textures or dancing alphabets. Through such intricate choreography and design, Loher brings viewers on a journey through her ethereal landscapes, prompting contemplation on the interconnected, dialectic relationship between humanity and the natural world. In addition to the immersive video installations, "About Invisible Limits" features a window projection that animates the gallery space using interplays of light and shadow, blurring the boundaries between public and private space. Complementing the video installations are Loher's sculptural works, which serve as tangible manifestations of her elemental conceptualizations. Crafted from a diverse array of materials - as much as possible recycled and reused material - these unique forms embody the artist's exploration of tactility and symbolism. Ultimately, this diverse, yet collaborative oeuvre reflects the artist’s commitment to ecological awareness and somatic magic.
