SUMMER GROUP SHOW: IT BEGINS TO BLUR
AUGUST 15th - September 4th
Crossing Art is thrilled to announce "It Begins to Blur," a summer group exhibition showcasing the work of artists Basmat Levin, Bruce Rubenstein, Kim Young-Mi, Michael McGrath, Shen Jingdong, and Tigran Tsitoghdzyan. This vibrant exhibition, featuring an eclectic mix of faces and figures, explores the profound intimacy found within dreams, nostalgia, kinship, and the imaginative realms in between. By interweaving diverse approaches to portraiture, these six artists illuminate the intricate relationship between human sensibilities, memory, and motion.
Basmat Levin and Tigran Tsitoghdzyan focus on faces and figures, each bringing a unique perspective to their work. Levin's art blends a multitude of cultural inspirations with blooming motifs, resulting in portraits that are both larger-than-life and invitingly intimate. Tsitoghdzyan's portraits, crafted with meticulous attention to light and shadow, offer a meditative experience that blurs the boundaries between viewer and subject, prompting deep reflection. Michael McGrath and Shen Jingdong both approach the theme of memory with a childlike wonder: McGrath conjures ethereal worlds where enigmatic figures and faces float amidst enchanting landscapes, blending nostalgia with nature and mystical elements. In contrast, Jingdong's use of glossy, saturated colors in his portraits injects a playful and humorous spirit, reflecting a vibrant dialogue between China's historical and contemporary narratives. His art allows viewers to engage with the complexity of cultural memory through a lens of lively, imaginative expression. Bruce Rubenstein and Kim Young-Mi's works highlight themes of motion and movement. Rubenstein's dynamic compositions and bold lines are complemented by fluid, organic shapes and a vibrant color palette, evoking a sense of rhythm and vitality. Kim Young-Mi's art, characterized by its playful and expressive style, offers reflections on identity, culture, and performance, capturing the essence of human experience with a profound energy.
"It Begins to Blur" encourages viewers to experience the rich tapestry of human faces, figures, and memories through the eyes of these six artists. This exhibition seeks to distill the layered effects of their portraits and human figures, encouraging visitors to pause and discover fragments of their own reflections along the journey.
